With 44 churches from which to choose, this town of nearly 10,000 people offers everyone a church home. The first religious services in Independence were in December of 1869, in a local hayshed residence. Over the next four years, nine churches were established, including the First Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church, Catholic Church, Episcopal Church, The United Brethren Church, and the First Christian Church.
