Raymond Tarry
Raymond L. Tarry, 85, of Independence, died Wednesday (August 19, 2009) afternoon at Windsor Place in Independence.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and the First United Methodist Church with the Reverends Jack and Marilyn Gregory, pastors, officiating. Private interment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery. Although the casket has been closed, friends may call to register at the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel from 12 noon until 8:00 p.m. on Friday. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the First United Methodist Church of Independence and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.
Raymond Lawrence Tarry was born September 13, 1923 at Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Lawrence M. Tarry and Edith (Hampton) Tarry. He attended Quindaro Grade School in Kansas City and graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1941. He served with the United States Navy from 1943 until 1946. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education in 1947. He worked in Kansas City, Missouri for Montgomery Ward from 1947 until 1949 when he moved to Independence. He worked for the Independence Daily Reporter from 1949 until 1951. In 1959, he joined Sinclair Pipeline Company and worked for Sinclair and ARCO Pipeline Company as a Draftsman and Graphics Illustrator until his retirement in 1985 after 34 years of service.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence where he sang in the choir for many years. He was well known as a prize winning wood carver.
On December 27, 1946 at Independence, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Boner. Mrs. Tarry survives at the home.
Additional survivors include: two sons, Craig Tarry of Concord, California and Mark Tarry and his wife Lisa of Leawood, Kansas; a daughter Linda Kay Tarry and her husband Floyd Stilley of Washintgon, Virginia; three grandchildren, Jacob Stilley, Evan Tarry and Ryan Tarry.
