The William Inge Center for the Arts conducts arts education events for youth and adults, play development readings, and performances for the community year-round. It is best known for its annual William Inge Theatre Festival, which brings to Independence an acclaimed playwright. The festival then honors the playwright's work, featuring professional performers and day-time theater workshops for the public. Past Honorees include Neil Simon, August Wilson, Arthur Miller, Stephen Sondheim, and many more.

The 27th annual Festival is April 23-26, 2008, and honors Christopher Durang.
